Michalis Kokkalis interview in NET’s ‘Time Machine’ documentary:
Michalis Kokkalis was born in Corfu. He became interested in photography at a very young age having been greatly influenced and encouraged by his own family. He has been a professional photographer ever since 1950.
His career in photography has been a successful one. Numerous participations and distinctions in important exhibitions in Greece and abroad have established him as one of the most meritorious Greek photographers.
Important events during his 50 year career were:
1956: Had his photographs displayed and he was awarded a commendation at the 4th International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki.
1960: Had his photographs displayed at the 8th International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki.
1977: Participated in the 6th Panhellenic Slides Competition.
1978: Participated in the 8th Panhellenic Slides Competition.
1985: He was awarded 1st prize in the European Slides Competition organized by Agfa, entitled “Natural Colours”.
1987: Participated in “Expo Arte” exhibition in Bari, Italy representing Greece.
2002: He was awarded a commendation by the Mayor of Corfu for his contribution to the tourism of Corfu.
30th June – 13th July 2003: Organised a personal black and white /coloured photograph exhibition at the Municipal Picture Gallery entitled “Anadromi” (retrospection).
2003: He provided photographs from his archive for the book “Zophoros of Ionian Islands”. This particular book was an action incorporated in the Ionian Island’s Regional Operational Programme 2000-2006 and was co-funded by the European Union (75%).
2005: He also provided photographs from his archive for the book “Ta Kerkiraika – Historical Analects” by Antonis I. Agious (Stamuli Publications).
2007: Awarded “Complimentary Presentation” for his offer to folk civilisation through photography by “Laodamas”
Michalis Kokkalis’ archive consists of 4,143 black & white photos, 2,970 colour negatives, 822 135-slides and 1,580 6×7 slides, a total of 9,515 photos.
